ISRC Code Explained for Independent Artists

ISRC Code Explained for Independent Artists

What is an ISRC?

The International Standard Recording Code (ISRC) is the international identification system for sound recordings. Each ISRC is a unique and permanent identifier for a specific recording, acting as its digital fingerprint. Each recording should have only one ISRC, which should never be reused for another recording.

The ISRC verifies associated recording information, including:

  • Artist name
  • Track title
  • Album title
  • Label name
  • UPC (Universal Product Code)

Who Needs an ISRC?

If you release music for sale or streaming, you need an ISRC. Independent artists, record labels, and music distributors assign an ISRC to each unique recording released on CD, download, or streaming platforms

For instance, if an artist releases an album with six tracks, each track would be assigned a unique ISRC. These ISRCs will represent those specific recordings forever.

Understanding ISRC Structure

An ISRC is always 12 characters long:

  • The first 2 letters are the country code.
  • The next 3 characters are the alphanumeric registrant code of the party issuing the ISRC.
  • The next 2 numbers represent the last 2 digits of the reference year.
  • The final 5 digits identify the particular sound or video recording.

Where to Get an ISRC Code

In India, you can obtain an ISRC from the Indian Music Industry website free of charge. Additionally, most digital distributors provide ISRC codes for free when you sign up for their services.

Importance of ISRC Codes in the Digital Era

An ISRC code is embedded into your song, uniquely identifying the recording. This enables tracking of your music’s streaming and sales stats worldwide. Performing rights societies use ISRC codes to track usage and pay performance royalties. Without an ISRC code, it becomes difficult for PROs to track your song’s usage and send you your royalties.

Importance of Separate ISRCs for Different Versions

Each new version or sound recording of the same composition requires a separate ISRC. This distinction is crucial to accurately track and manage royalties for each version of your work.

Handling ISRC Codes When Signed to a Label

If you are signed to a label, they will handle the assignment of ISRC codes for your recordings. However, as an independent artist, you need to ensure each recording has its own ISRC to properly manage your royalties.
